Mezzo Forte
This image began in a charcoal sketch, and then I re-worked it with
colored pencil.
I had done various studies, with smooth lines and some with more texture to
in order to emulate brush strokes. My imagination and inspiration escaped to
“Starry Night” a remembrance of Van Gogh, my father’s favorite master painter.
As a child I remember turning pages of an oversized book of Van Gogh’s work in
my father’s studio, and looking deep into the photographs of the texture and
paint blobs that made such beautiful images.
After completing the studies, I rendered a version in watercolor, and then
finally produced the composition in oil. In water color the image was soft and
fluid. The movement of the strokes is where this landscape finds its strength.
The end result is a strong connection to a surreal dream that we all remember as
small children, walking along on a beautiful spring day in a park.
